Unfortunately, my devout Catholic family members and extended family fully support trump and his destructive agenda. Only my sister and I have abandoned the church for a more logical and environmentally conscientious way of life. We both hope that other family members will come to their senses.

Two successive popes are preaching a very sophisticated climate message, but maybe your Catholic family members (and you) have missed this.

I didn't miss it and I'm no longer a Catholic. My Catholic family believed Pope Francis was too liberal and likely feel the same about Pope Leo. They are MAGA loyalists. Oh well…

The American Catholic Church is grossly out of step with the global Catholic Church. For now, especially because of this new Pope, my husband and I have decided to stay. We found a local parish which is not a maga mouthpiece. And I completely sympathize with your decision. It's not unreasonable.

Dr. Hayhoe, I read your 2021 article about climate change and I remember, very distinctly, when the town of Lytton in B.C., my former home province, was all but burned out. You note that temperatures are 2 degrees warmer when compared to the Industrial Revolution times. I recognize that scientists see this trend as alarming, but for the average person, that number is not at all scary. How can I better explain the planetary risks of even a 1 degree rise to better illustrate the dire path we’re on?

Ok one in a thousand or record breaking. So what's happening? The climate has changed. Next year and every year on (or more accurately tomorrow and every day on) the climate will have changed for the worse. True that compared to humanities previous climate these are record breaking. But all you can say is the recent disasters where the least disastrous compared to those to come .And that is true every day on.
