According to ice core data collected by NASA the amount of CO2 currently in the atmosphere has never existed in the history of the planet. This is a crisis speeding into a climate catastrophe. Since the industrial revolution thousands of species of land, sea and air animals have gone extinct. We are basically slow walking into a mass level extinction event.

Writing as an observer of recent machinations in the U.S., I see a system that allows one man to run the country with little to no effective controls on his determinations. This means that the proper controls were not in place to handle such a abuse of power. How can writing to your local, state, regional, etc elected member be effective? The American people will have to take to the streets in an effort to demonstrate their non-agreement with the dismantling of governmental climate change action and the courts must help them. Unfortunately, many Americans believe that Trump was sent by God, quite possibly Trump does, and with a sizeable proportion of the population deluded or uneducated, there may be no stopping of the narcissistic juggernaut.

Thank you Katharine for writing this piece! I'm an environmental scientist working to tackle climate change, but lately, I often find myself feeling discouraged by everything happening in the world. I've also spent the past couple of years working in the US, so I had the chance to witness myself all the recent non sense. I really appreciated the final section on 'what we can do'. I believe it's essential to offer people tangible ways to take action, rather than just feeding them with negativity.

The EPA has received 44,000 comments on the endangerment finding so far with a month to go. Keep up the pressure! As Dr. Hayhoe says so well in the piece, a hurricane doesn't ask about your politics!

Here's a blog from yesterday about how Citizens' Climate responded to the EPA:
