When I read that Pacific Island nations were further cutting emissions despite already being net negative, because every bit of warming counts, I teared up!

How can we in the West not be shamed and then inspired by their selflessness? How can it not spur us, the ones actually causing the problem, to action?

It helps when your nation is confronted with direct, existential consequences from climate chaos. It will happen to the rest of the world, including the US, much sooner than most people expect. In fact, it has in most countries in certain areas although, other than on the coast, not with the persistent threat that island nations face.

I live in Canada where wildfires now happen every year and their toxic smoke drifts across the country and continent. Flooding is becoming more frequent, too. The consequences are here now, yet our politicians largely ignore the issue. We need to start voting for candidates who care about climate change and actually follow through.

My family immigrated here from a small island nation that cares and acts because they are on the front lines of these changes. We can learn a lot from them.

Yes, I know very well the suffering Canadians have been experiencing the last several years from fire (& even heat waves/domes in certain parts of the country, even though you're far north). I live in Oregon, so I've had some of the same experiences.

Thank you Katharine for pointing out that the "spirit of collaboration and determination shone through in every conversation I had, reminding me that real progress is not only possible—it’s already underway". This is so easy to miss: that while the carpet of the old order is being rolled up all around us, nevertheless quietly, steadily, but inexorably a new global civilisation taking shape. One that benefits all the world's citizens, not just a few. This progress - these quantum leaps in our consciousness - really challenge pre-conceived notions of what human nature is.
